The History of Sand Mountain Woodworking

John Working in his ShopAs a young pup, I got a job on the coast of Maine with a small contracting company. My boss was your quintessential Maine yankee, tough as they come, but with a heart as big as the state. For some reason (that I still don't understand ) he saw something in this long haired boy and took me under his wing. He instilled in me-occasionally quite forcefully – a strong work ethic. He would accept nothing short of perfection, making me redo anything that didn’t measure up to his standards. Some 40 years later, I still hear his Maine accent ringing in my ears. I was quite fortunate to be mentored by such a experienced craftsman, and cherish the time spent with him. Thank you Art.

Better that 25 years of my working life was spent in Bucks County Pa as a general contractor . An area of very exclusive homes and knowledgeable clients. Competition was great and only the best players thrived. Many of the structures I worked on during this time pre date the founding of the country, with owners that are sensitive to importance of their homes and quite demanding of their contractors. It was during this time that my skills were honed and mastered. A large part of most of these projects involved doing serious woodworking. It was a fulfilling time altho quite hectic. Some of the galleries and testimonials are from this era.

Looking to slow it down and enjoy life a little more, 10 years ago I relocated to Sand Mountain , Alabama, an area of incredible beauty. I was again fortunate to be involved in some awesome projects. Many of them renovations of old warehouses into living spaces. While the style was different from the historic nature of previous work , the attention to detail remained the same. Again ,some of the galleries and testimonials are from this time frame.

While I have enjoyed being a general contractor , the demands of long hours and 40 years spend on ladders, knees, under buildings etc, have exacted their price. To that end , I am attempting to focus on my first love of woodworking. While this represents a small change in direction, my commitment to providing a quality product at a fair price remains the same. Thank you for visiting.
